Self-defense training increases confidence. It also increases physical and mental skills and work ethic. IED Mymensingh and Jessore centers organized self-defense training for teenage students from the two cities in January.

The skill development training program on self-defense and confidence building began at 8:30 am on January 9 at the Mymensingh Ladies Club ground. Twenty teenage girls aged 12-17 from Kristapur, Rally Crossroads and Charpara areas participated in the training, which lasted until January 27.

Trainer Badal Lal Das teaches various self-defense techniques to teenage girls for an hour every day from 8:30 am. The training concluded on January 28.

Ferdous Ara Mahmuda Helen, Vice President of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad Central Committee, Suraiya Yasmin Ritu, Joint Convener of Women’s Forum, Development Officer Md. Shakhawat Hossain, and Nur Nahar Begum, Manager of IED Mymensingh Center, among others were attended in the event.

Expressing her feelings, participant Sweety said, “Our morale has increased after participating in the training. We will now be able to walk fearlessly and defend ourselves.”

Trainer Badal Lal Das said, “The more effort and practice you put into training, the more successful you will be. If you practice properly, the girls will improve physically and mentally. Their desire for any task will increase.”

Suraiya Yasmin Ritu said, “There will be no fear in the minds of students trained in self-defense. This is a big initiative of IED.” Ferdous Ara Mahmuda Helen said, “Girls are now moving forward in all fields, starting from cricket and football. You too move forward, grow up by studying, and become human beings.”

Nur Nahar Begum, Manager, IED Mymensingh Center said, “It is not enough to just take classes for these 16 days. You have to continue practicing regularly and practice at least once a month with those who have learned before.” Shakhawat Hossain said in his closing speech, “The training is a timely step for girls at present. However, the practice has to be maintained.”

Meanwhile, the IED Jessore center also organized a self-defense training from January 7 to 28. 20 teenage girls studying in different schools of the city participated in the 16-day training. The trainer was Md. Anwar Hossain, coach of the District Sports Association’s Karate Council.

The training was concluded on January 28 at Talikhola in the city. The event was chaired by Jessore Center Manager Beethika Sarkar and was attended by writer and journalist Habibur Rahman Milon, Mahila Parishad Legal Affairs Secretary Advocate Kamrun Nahar Kona, and guardians and locals of the teenage girls undergoing training. Over a hundred teenage girls have taken self-defense training in five batches so far, organized by the IED Jessore Center.
