Workshop on “Status of Women in PRSP in Bangladesh”

Institute for Environment and Development (IED) in collaboration with Bangladesh Nari Progati Songha (BNPS) organized workshop for sharing findings on draft research report entitled “Status of Women in PRSP in Bangladesh” is held on October 1, 2009 at Press club auditorium, Netrakona. The workshop was moderated by Ms. Shahnaz Sumi, Deputy Director of BNPS and presided over by Professor Jatin Sarkar while Dr. Kaniz N. Siddique, the consultant of the study, shared the research findings on the draft report. Mr. Md. Nurul Amin, Deputy Commissioner, Netrakona attended the seminar as chief guest. Mr. Swapan Pal (Swabolombi), Ms. Rehena Siddika and Mr. Habibur Rahman, ex-teacher were the panelists in the event. About 64 participants from different ministries of the government, LG representatives, civil society members, women leader, businessmen, development activists, lawyers, political leaders & activists, teachers, journalists, think-tanks provided their inputs on the draft. Among others, Mr. Khandokar Anisur Rahman, Secretary, CPB, Netrakona; Mr. Sanwar Hossain Bhuian, President, Udichi, Netrakona; Mr. Ziaur Rahman Khokon, Secretary, Shikor; Ms. Rehena Siddika, Secretary, Mohila Parishad, Netrakona; Ms. Tuhin Akter, Vice chairman, UZ, Netrakona, Ms. Alpona Begum, reporter, Daily Sangbad and Mr. Gazi Mozammel Hossain Tuku, Secretary, Chatro league, Netrakona also participated in open discussion. The research argued that some discriminatory personal & religious laws, political culture, lack of political commitment, the patriarchal socio-economic system and mindset, Bangladesh could not proceed to achieve gender equality. She also emphasized the importance of gender sensitivity of the policy makers and a gender responsive framework into PRSP & other policy formulation in the country.
